LED's (Light Emitting Diodes) are small, solid light bulbs, which are extremely energy efficient. Until recently, LEDs were limited to single-bulb use in applications such as instrument panels, electronics, pen-lights and strings of Christmas lights. Now LEDs can be found in other light sources that weren't applicable until only a year ago. Now the evolution of the LED takes another giant leap--SMD or Surface Mount Diode. This is new technology and the difference from the old is significant.
For example: the old regular 4ft Fluorescent T8 lights use 32 watts of power. The new 4-ft. LED SMD T8 uses only 15 watts per light, with nearly twice the brightness!
